Dr. Smitha Sunil Kumaran Nair leads the Center for Postgraduate Studies at the Middle East College in Muscat, Oman. She and her colleagues use Turnitin to ensure that their graduate students understand the importance of original research and attribution, not only during their time at the college but also in their future careers. She works to emphasize the values of honesty and creativity to her students and cultivate a culture of academic integrity that can serve as an example for other institutions around the world.
“The relevance of research ethics needs to be understood by each and every student in the institution...They need to produce the original work of themselves without copying and pasting materials done by the researchers.”
Smitha also finds that Turnitin’s tools play a critical role in safeguarding the institution’s reputation and maintaining their image as honest and morally upstanding. In order for work to be accepted at conferences and in journals, it’s critical that the research is original and does not contain plagiarism. By using Turnitin’s originality checking services, Smitha and her colleagues are confident that their students’ work is authentic and will positively represent the institution.
