As education grapples with the fast-paced shift from in-class to remote to hybrid learning, communication between students and instructors has suffered. Feeling less guided, many students may even feel pressured into turning to the Internet for workarounds or “cheats”. But technology can also give students and educators the support they need to positively reinforce academic integrity by offering formative learning tools and data insights to deter plagiarism. This session will provide strategies for adopting a culture of academic integrity across your institution, and how to use Turnitin’s products to create positive engagement and relieve student anxiety.

Essay mills have been a growing concern for educators globally since the start of the pandemic and are becoming increasingly prolific in the UK, soon to be outlawed in England. However, the battle for academic integrity will not be won by legislation alone. Open dialogue between students, academics, and administrators is critical in ensuring a shared understanding of what constitutes cheating. We’re pleased to bring together voices of the education sector—including the student—to offer best practices for establishing institutional policies, building awareness, and introducing investigative technology, in an effort to reduce the risks associated with contract cheating.

But one year on, a new hybrid model of education has emerged that seeks to become a permanent fixture for the academic landscape. In this one-to-one interview, Heriot-Watt professor, Thomas Wong, will illustrate why—and crucially how—Heriot Watt invested in Gradescope to support this new form of assessment delivery. He’ll share best practices on how institution’s interested in Gradescope can work together to do the same.

Many further and higher education institutions now report the same challenge: that students are starting their courses unprepared for their next level of study and lacking in the relevant academic writing skills they need to succeed. Feeling ill-equipped to deal with new academic demands, some students even turn to plagiarism or contract cheating. But students can only grow as independent and honest learners when they engage with high-quality and timely feedback. Join us as we delve into how Turnitin can help lay the foundations of academic integrity and prepare students with core skills that prepare them for the next steps in their academic or professional careers.
