Melanie’s primary role as academic teaching scholar is to teach, and as such she feels very passionately about giving her students stellar feedback. This year she has made it her focus to improve student satisfaction scores in regards to the feedback they receive. Melanie uses Turnitin for online submissions and assessment so that she can provide them more detailed feedback, and as a mechanism to help teach proper research and writing skills, including citation and paraphrasing.
“I just found that the students didn’t quite understand exactly what plagiarism was and so they were very, very worried.”
Melanie found that as many times she was giving lectures and doing activities with the students in her courses around plagiarism and academic integrity, they were still unclear about exactly what constituted plagiarism and anxious about the possibility of accidentally committing an offense. She used Turnitin as a visible learning tool, where the students can actually see right away where similarities exist. So, Melanie encourages her students to submit early in order to learn where they have gone wrong and then offers first stage feedback in preparation for the final submission. Obviously, her students are learning proper paraphrasing and citation practices but are also learning the value of not leaving things until the last minute!
