How do I view an Originality Report?

If your instructor has given students access to Originality Reports, you will see a colored rectangular icon next to your submittal date in your class portfolio. Click on that icon and you will see your Originality Report. Please note that students can only view Originality Reports if their instructor has chosen to give students access to reports.

What are the different modes for the Originality Report?

Cumulative Mode
This is the default view and shows the highest text matches together. The paper is on the left while the matching sources are on the right. To go to this mode, select "show highest matches together" from the pulldown menu near the top of the report.
Single Source Mode
This view allows you to see all of the sources found for a paper. Sources with high percentage matches will sometimes cover up other smaller source matches. Such sources can be viewed using this mode. To go to this mode, select "show matches one at a time" from the pull-down menu near the top of the report.

How can I tell which source the highlighted text is matched to?

In the Cumulative Mode (default view) each of the highlighted sections of text will be accompanied by a number in the upper right corner. This number corresponds to the number listed to the left of the matching source in the source list.

In the Single Source Mode (entire list of sources shown) all of the highlighted text is matched to the single source selected from the source list. Sources can be selected in this mode by clicking on the radio button to the left of the source.

How do I see all of the sources found for my paper?

To view all of the sources found for a paper select "show matches one at a time" from the "mode:" pull-down menu. To view the text matching an individual source on the list, click the radio button to the left of the source.

How do I directly compare the matching text with the source text?

To see a direct comparison between your paper's text and that of a source, click on the highlighted text from your paper. The source text will appear on the right. The matching text will be highlighted to making it easier to find.

How do I exclude quotes from being marked as unoriginal?

To exclude text that is within quotation marks, click on the "exclude quoted" link located to the right of the Overall Similarity Index (the total percentage matching). Please note using the "exclude quoted" feature will only effect a temporary change to the Originality Report. Once the Originality Report window is closed (or "include quoted" is clicked) the report will revert to its original state.

How do I exclude bibliographic material from being marked as unoriginal?

How long does it take for an Originality Report to generate?

If the paper is a first submission, it can take up to ten minutes to generate. If the paper is a resubmission overwriting a previous submission, the Originality Report will take 24 hours to generate.
