Sakai

  • Turnitin currently supports an integration with Sakai originally developed by Indiana University for use with Sakai Assignments 2
  • The current plug-in supports both Assignments 1 and Assignments 2. The Plug-in includes a migration tool to migrate from prior Sakai plug-ins to the new one
  • The Turnitin team has enhanced this integration to fully support GradeMark, and Turnitin advanced assignment options such as e-rater
  • The latest integration also supports multiple instructors on a Turnitin assignment, thus providing extended access to the Turnitin Document Viewer
  • The integration can be configured for use in Turnitin via the unique "Sakai" configuration button within Turnitin. Download installation instructions
  • There are known issues with the former integration built for use with Assignments 1. See known issues
  • More information on Sakai can be found on The Sakai Confluence Community Pages

Known Issues With Original Assignments 1 Integration

(Built using Open API):

  • All papers submitted to single instructor account - all instructors have access to each others papers once inside Turnitin
  • Titles in Turnitin don't match with Sakai
  • Class and Assignment dates sent to Turnitin do not match dates in Sakai

FAQs

What are the differences between Assignments 1 / Assignments 2?

Assignment 2 offers four principal advantages over the legacy assignments tool:

  • A redesigned and well-tested user interface
  • Thoroughgoing relational data model rather than XML (which the legacy tool uses in some fields) improves performance
  • More direct integration with gradebook services make the integration less brittle and prone to error
  • Some feature additions (eg. gradebook helpers, assignments with multiple versioned submissions)

What Versions of Sakai does the integration support?

(pending further research) 2.8, 2.9

How do I enable / install / access the Turnitin integration?

Do I need a different version of the integration if I want to use Assignments 1?

No, you can download the integration from Sakai Project

What does the Turnitin integration offer?

Gives the ability to add plagiarism checking to Sakai assignments, displaying a colour coded link to the Originality report in the assignment inbox.

How does it work?

A class is created in Turnitin once for a Sakai course. An assignment is made in Turnitin immediately upon creating an assignment in Sakai (if the Use Turnitin option is enabled).

Submissions and Originality Report checking happen periodically by making use of scheduled tasks setup in Sakai. When a task is triggered it checks Turnitin for updates to see if reports have been generated or if submissions are pending, sends them to Turnitin.

Is there a migration path for courses already created with the open api?

There is currently no migration path for OPEN API data. Meaning if you currently use Assignments 1 (using the OPEN API) and wish to move to Assignments 2, or Assignments 1 (Using SRC 9) then you'll have to:

  • a.) Create new courses/assignments
  • b.) Attempt to have engineers migrate the data in the Turnitin Database, which could be a lengthy and complicated process.

How do I create an assignment using Turnitin?

From the side menu, click the 'Assignments' link (or Assignment2 if you're using that). Click the 'Add' link and select 'Use Turnitin' from the assignment options. From there you can select Turnitin specific options

How do I submit to Turnitin?

Simply attach your paper and submit as normal. (Note: The integration currently only supports 'Attachments')

What Turnitin assignment options are available?

  • Submit papers to the following repository:
    • None
    • Standard Paper Repository
    • Institution Paper Repository
  • Generate originality reports:
    • Immediately
    • On Due Date
  • Allow students to view report

  • Check originality against:
    • Turnitin paper repository
    • Current and archived internet
    • Periodicals, journals, and publications
    • Institution-specific repository

I clicked on an Originality Report report and got a not found error:

If you're using Assignments1 and have resubmitted it's likely the newly generated report hasn't been returned yet.

The usual time between report checks is 5 minutes, although this could be longer or shorter depending on the interval your administrator has set. Please allow at least this long before checking again.
