Turnitin® for iPad®: iOS 7 Compatibility

Apple® recently released iOS 7, a new operating system for iPad. If you’ve upgraded to iOS 7 you may be experiencing some unexpected behavior when using Turnitin for iPad.

We are working to make the necessary improvements to the app that will allow it to function elegantly with iOS 7. Meanwhile, we wanted to share with you some known issues when using Turnitin for iPad in iOS 7 and let you know how you can work around them.

Downloading Papers

Known Issue: When syncing papers from Turnitin down to your device (either by tapping the cloud icon and following prompts to “Sync Papers” or by toggling on the “Sync Papers” setting under an assignment's “Assignment Info”), some users may experience long delays before papers will download.

Workaround: Do not enable when prompted, or toggle off if already enabled, the “Sync Papers” option. Instead, download papers individually:

  • Option 1: While viewing the list of papers for an assignment, tap the blue cloud icon on each to download each individual paper in succession—there is no need to wait for each paper to actually download.
  • Option 2: When you're grading a paper, Turnitin for iPad already downloads a few papers for you that are next in the list. Just use the two-finger-swipe, as described in the in-app tutorial, to move to the next paper—the app will continue to download papers "ahead of you" as you continue your grading.

Originality Reports Not Rendering Completely

Known Issue: Occasionally, highlights indicating a similarity match will not display completely. You may notice that part of a line is highlighted even though the match is to a larger passage of text.

Workaround: Simply leave the paper and return to it. You can do this by going back to the assignment inbox then tapping on the item in the list, or by using a two-finger-swipe to go to the next paper then two-finger-swipe to go back to the first paper.

Unlinking Account from iPad Doesn’t Work

Known Issue: When trying to unlink your account, some users will notice the app get stuck trying to unlink. This occurs if there is any syncing taking place (where the app is communicating with Turnitin servers). The app will then “hang” in this state indefinitely.

Workaround: Force-quit the app. Note—you do this differently in iOS 7 than in previous versions of iOS. First, double-click the iPad ‘Home’ button. Second, find the Turnitin for iPad app by scrolling left or right. Then, swipe the app image upward out of the multitasking list. When you open the Turnitin app again, your device will still be linked to your account. Wait a few minutes to ensure the app is done syncing, then try unlinking again.

As a TurnitinUK instructor you will be able to log in using your username and password for submit.ac.uk, or using your class access code if you access TurnitinUK through an LMS integration. What features are available in Turnitin for iPad? Do I need to do anything through Turnitin directly?

Turnitin for iPad is designed to allow Turnitin instructors to view student papers in OriginalityCheck and use GradeMark to leave feedback from their iPads. With Turnitin for iPad you will be able to:

  • View papers that have been submitted to assignments
  • Add QuickMark comments to papers
  • Add in line text comments to papers
  • Add bubble comments to papers
  • Convert bubble comments to QuickMark comments
  • Mark papers using rubrics that have been previously attached to assignments
  • Leave Voice Comments on papers
  • Leave general comments on papers
  • Add and change grades for papers
  • See the Originality Report content match overview list of sources for papers
  • See glimpses for content matches on papers

Class management, assignment management, and paper submissions must be performed through Turnitin directly or through the Turnitin integration in your LMS.

To view matches from the OriginalityCheck in Turnitin for iPad:

  1. Tap on the OriginalityCheck button at the top right of the paper

Matches to sources will then be highlighted within the paper. Tap on the numbered flag at the beginning of a match highlight to view the glimpse (view of the source text) for a match.

I have more questions. How can I contact Turnitin support?

Please visit our Help Center.

How do I logout of Turnitin for iPad?

To log out of Turnitin for iPad:

  1. Navigate to the assignment inbox screen in Turnitin for iPad (the button in the upper left will say “Assignments”)
  2. Tap on the user profile button in the upper right (it will look like the outline of a head)
  3. Tap the “Unlink iPad from Turnitin” button

If you logged in to the app with an access code or added a class with an access code, unlinking the iPad will cancel those class access codes. You will need to regenerate access codes for your classes from within your LMS before signing in to Turnitin for iPad again.

What do I do if I lose my iPad while signed into Turnitin for iPad?

We recommend using the passcode lock feature Apple offers on the iPad (found under the General settings in your iPad’s device settings). That will require a passcode to be entered to wake up your iPad whenever it goes to sleep and should keep anyone from being able to access any of your information (i.e. email or Turnitin for iPad papers).

Apple also offers the ability to remotely delete data from your iPad. An Apple support document regarding this can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2701
