Enhancing the Teacher-Student Conversation

"[Feedback Studio] helps them to see the mistake and also how to fix it and to hopefully never make that mistake again. It’s sort of part of that learning process."
“It’s a process. They have so much to learn and there are so many variables when it comes to writing that they can feel very overwhelmed.” Sarah Henderson, an English professor, sees students struggling with grammar, composition, and idea conceptualization. She uses Turnitin Feedback Studio as a tool to support growth and improve student investment in their own success. “It helps them to see the mistake and also how to fix it and to hopefully never make that mistake again. It’s sort of part of that learning process.” Henderson requires that her students come to their writing conferences with a question, to encourage engagement and to delve into areas of difficulty. Feedback Studio is a conduit for that dialogue, allowing Henderson to see if students have seen her feedback, and allowing students to get robust, timely, actionable feedback.
The teacher-student conversation about plagiarism also presents challenges and can veer into a gray area with no definitive evidence of cheating. Henderson uses Feedback Studio to alleviate uncertainty and initiate more productive conversations about originality in her classes. “It helps the students who feel accountable. They start to understand a little bit more.”
